Q & A, Helpful Info & Details

 

We've taken our knowledge and provided details for the three typical styles of events below. In each section, you'll find some standard questions we ask & other details you would want to discuss with EVERY company you hire. In no way is this an all inclusive list, but it hits most of the high points, and we are certainly able to answer these and any other question you have as we help you plan the music options for your event! Take a moment and look these over, then let's have a chat about your wants, needs, wishes, expectations and how 1 of a Kind can exceed them!

You have a fabulous idea, and now you just need to get there, right? So, here's how to get the most out of the music vendors and services you need to make your event perfect!

 

Finding a vendor is hard work, but it shouldn't be like pulling teeth, nor should it be too good to be true. All of the companies you contact should have standards. For instance at 1 of a Kind we do not drink while we work, nor do we smoke. That is our standard, and we are very serious about it! You pay us for time, & if we are off smoking or too drunk to function, then your event suffers & your money is wasted. The list below is far from inclusive, but it gives you some of most frequently asked questions & our answers. Feel free to ask other vendors the same & see how we compare!

 

  • How often & how long will your breaks be? At 1 of a Kind, we aren't typically alone, so breaks are rare. If we are alone at your event, the music doesn't stop!

  • What will be playing while you take a break? Your personalized playlist!

  • Is there a travel time fee or music-between-breaks fee? Our quotes are all inclusive!

  • Are there any other costs not included in the initial quote? Not typically, but if there is a change to the needs of your party it will need to be discussed.

  • What will the band members or DJ wear the night of the wedding? We dress for the occassion, in a way that we do not stand out!

  • Is the band or DJ willing to play overtime if desired? If so, what’s the cost? Yes! We typically offer that option. The rates can be discussed, & we even offer to facilitate a "passing of the hat" if your guests' party is bigger that your budget!

  • What does the cancellation policy entail? Refunds of deposits paid are subject to re-booking your event & the time before the original date to offer it to our waiting list. Once we arrive at your event, any remaining fees are due.

  • Will the band or DJ take requests from guests? This is all up to you! We are happy to take requests prior or during the event, or manage guests if you prefer to only have your selections played. Your party, your money, your choice! Let's discuss the options!

  • Do they sing in other languages? Our selection of karaoke & DJ does include some non-English options & depending on your preferrences, they can be included or not. We will say that we are not a Tejano DJ company. While we have a variety of Tejano music, it is not our specialty. If you need an ALL TEJANO event, then 1 of a Kind is not for you.

  • What equipment am I expected to provide? With 1 of a Kind, we typically bring everything we need, except a standard power outlet & chairs.

  • How much time for set up do you need? We typically arrive an hour or so before we begin playing to allow for any hiccups in setup.

  • What is the process for a sound check? For DJ events, we test for volume and that all equipment is in working order. In addition to that, if karaoke (or live singing) is part of the party, then we do a full sound check using all mics WITH VOCALS! Not all karaoke hosts sing, but setting up equipment and ensuring no feedback, etc.., requires a vocal test. If a karaoke host or band doesn't do this, the sound is not all it can be & you might want to consider a company that does! Basically, if they aren't willing to sing on their mics, would you really want to?

  • Will the band or DJ require meals/beverages during the event? As a DJ with a 'no alcohol on duty' policy, the answer varies with duration of event, and other factors. Let's talk about it!

  • Do you require a face to face meeting to book an event? 1 of a Kind may not require it, but we certainly will do so when the customer asks. It's important to know if the person arriving at your ceremony has twenty seven nose rings or purple hair! There is a place & time for every fashion choice, but sporting a new facial tat may not be the best way to arrive at a black tie wedding or coporate holiday party!

  • How do you keep your music up to date? 1 of a Kind PAYS FOR IT! Sadly, the world of DJ music is full of people who download songs illegally. We enjoy our freedoms & are happy to spend some to support the artist that own it!

  • Are we able to submit a 'do not play' list? Yes & if we feel something is not apporpriate for your event, we will consult with you on it prior to playing any selections that we know to be vulgar or in poor taste.

  • Do you put up a banner at an event? Very rarely! We have set up a banner for things like a benefit car show, but typically just a small stack of business cards are placed on our table.

 

Weddings

 

A wedding is a monumental event that you want to remember for decades to come.. for all the right reasons. In that effort, we truly want the music to reflect the couple & their personalities! We ask a ton of questions & will hapily make suggestions if you need them. Here are some of our standard questions & the ways we help make your day fabulous!

 

  • What's on your ipod/phone? We like to know what your jam is! So don't be shy, pull out both of your playlists & send!

  • Will you need us to provide services for the ceremony? Will you have someone singing live? If so, we are more than qualified for that. We will want to know ahead of time so that we can speak with them and get the best track available for their songs.

  • Is your ceremony & reception in the same location/room? If so, that changes our timeing for set up and sound checks. Also, if we are providing music for both, & the location is split, that changes our timing & set up needs.

  • Will you want us to accept requests from your guests or wedding party? Many couples chose to limit the requests from their guests. There are several ways to do so, and we will happily find the right option for you. We even encourage a song request be included with their RSVP & will sort/list those on your behalf then go over the list to weed out anything that isn't something you'd like. Some couples ask us to accept requests but to use our judgement on content.

  • What about having karaoke at our reception? It is a fun & entertaining addition to the celebration, and we can add it at no extra charge! Who wouldn't enjoy the groom & his buds singing like Goose & Maverick or the bride's bestie belting out some smooth Etta!

  • Will you help us find the right song for our first dance? That is exactly why we ask a trillion questions of our couples! We want to play the perfect song for you two, as well as having that perfect daddy/daughter & mother/son song! We have several suggestions & even ask for a few other special songs to make sure we include a special moment for your parents & other bridal party members.

  • Will you work with a live band? On occasion we have been asked to work with a band. We typically cover the breaks between sets & offer those special requests that are not in the band's repertoire.

  • Are you able to provide music for the cocktail hour, dinner & the party to follow? Yes, yes & yes! We pride ourselves in knowing when to break out the Wobble and when Sinatra is more the right choice!

  • Will you arrive with your own equipment & sound needs, or will the venue I chose need to provide support & equipment? 1 of a Kind owns all their own equipment, we do ask to be provided with chairs. Power outlet is required.

  • Will you need access to the venue prior to the day of my wedding? In some instances. When providing music for ceremony, cocktail hour & reception it requires a bit different set up to be sure the sound is full. A walk through ahead of time ensures that is seamless. It also helps us to know if we will need to move our equipment from one place to another within the same location for those.

  • Will you provide emcee services? We do offer that, at no additional charge. If you are having us introduce anyone with a challenging name, please alert us. Also, a written list of who's who is quite helpful!

  • Will you coordinate with just the bride/groom or wedding planner, or both? We are happy to work with both, but will want the bride & groom to make personal decisions on the playlist. A wedding planner may know the etiquette of a tablescape, but the song that makes the two of you want to dance isn't always so obvious!

  • Are you able to provide music for an outdoor wedding? Yes, but we do have a few restrictions. We ask that we see the venue prior to event day, either with a virtual 360 tour or in person. The concern with outdoors is weather & party plans. Weather issues can be solved with an alternate location, but asking us to set up on the edge of a pool is far more risky!

  • Will you play music from our personal collections? Yes, depending on the format. This is one of the many reasons we spend so much time on your personal playlist. It allows us time to find the songs you want.

  • Why should we hire 1 of a Kind? That is simple. There are no other DJ's that give you what we do! Personalized playlist, emcee service, request management, song selection assistance & we DO NOT RAISE OUR PRICES BECAUSE IT IS A WEDDING, like most do. You won't pay triple for a monumental day!

Corporate Events

 

Bringing in karaoke & DJ services for a business function is fun! Where else can you hear the big boss busting out with Baby Got Back? We will be glad to entertain your employees or customers with great music for any number of events. We've joined the likes of Cracker Barrel Old Country Store for their holiday party & a local car club for a benefit car show. We've got something for everyone & look forward to helping you plan an event for your business.

 

  • Will you help us plan activities? Yes, if we need to! We want your party to be a success!

  • Do you offer a written contract? Yes, we are happy to meet with you and put your party in writing.

  • Do you provide a record of the charges for our accounting purposes? Yes, we will gladly provide you with a receipt for the services provided, with the fees & the company paid, with your payment details included.

  • Will you work outside of our regular business hours? Of course, we can arrange a party around your needs and time table.

  • What terms are available for payment? For events in the business world, we ask for a deposit to hold the date in most cases. We do however, make an exception on form of payment on ocassion & accept a business check for services. We do not typiaclly accept personal checks. Cash & certified funds are always accepted, or other arrangements can be discussed.

  • Do you offer services at a discounted rate for charity? Sometimes. Not every cause is near and dear to our hearts, but many are. Please contact us & allow us to put together a rate for your event. We can even provide options/suggestions to find the money to cover it.

  • What holidays do you offer services for? We will happily offer services for most holiday events. Please contact us for details & pricing on your event.

  • Do you provide services for religious celebrations? In most cases, we do. Each event is unique, and we'd love to discuss your event.
